Oregon sea lion caves

Sea Lion Caves

Located 11 miles north of our park, Sea Lion Caves is America's largest sea cave and home to a wild colony of Steller sea lions. Descend 208 feet by elevator into this massive natural cavern where hundreds of sea lions bark, play, and raise their pups in their natural habitat. During summer months, many sea lions migrate to the rocky ledges outside the cave, while fall and winter bring them back inside for breeding season. The site also features stunning coastal viewpoints, a gift shop, and interpretive displays about marine life and local ecology. It's a truly unique Oregon Coast experience that combines wildlife viewing with geological wonder, and the sea lions' thunderous calls echoing through the cave create an unforgettable sensory experience.

Crabbing at the Oregon Coast

Tide Pooling & Crabbing

The Oregon Coast around Florence offers world-class tide pooling and crabbing opportunities right at your doorstep. Explore rocky shorelines at low tide to discover colorful sea stars, anemones, hermit crabs, and countless other marine creatures in their natural pools - perfect for families and nature lovers alike. For those seeking fresh seafood, the Siuslaw River and bay provide excellent crabbing from docks, boats, or the jetty, with Dungeness crab abundant during season. Local shops rent crab rings and sell bait, making it easy to try your hand at catching dinner. Whether you're teaching kids about marine ecosystems in tide pools or pulling up a pot full of fresh crab, the coastal waters here deliver memorable experiences and maybe even a delicious meal.

Best Times: Check tide tables for optimal low tides; crabbing is best during incoming tides
